Just a few short years ago, we wouldn’t even be discussing cannabis cultivation and 420 friendly so freely and openly online. We know you’ve come a long way, baby, to get where you are today!
The use of medical marijuana, and even the use of recreational marijuana, dates back thousands of years BC. It is believed the marijuana plant arrived on U.S. soil in 1611 with the Jamestown settlers. Hemp and its fibers became an important export in the newly-founded colonies. For the next 300 years, marijuana was used in North America in a variety of ways, including for medicinal purposes, without much attention until the 20th century.
This is a brief history of cannabis legalization (or a cannabis timeline), along with the origins of 420 friendly so you can trace the progression of how we got where we are today.
1911: Massachusetts becomes first state to outlaw cannabis. Numerous states follow suit over the next 20 years.
1937: The Marihuana Tax Act passes, prohibiting cannabis at the federal level. Although is allows for medical cannabis use, the Act imposes fees and significant cannabis regulatory requirements.
1970: The Controlled Substance Act officially prohibited cannabis use for any reason, including medical cannabis, at the federal level.
When weed became highly illegal in the 1970s, marijuana enthusiasts came up with the code 420 friendly. Legend has it a group of high school boys in San Rafael, California, “The Waldos” as they were called, coined the secret cannabis culture phrase. They started using 4:20 pm as the time of day they would gather to partake in their favorite substance. The Grateful Dead popularized the term and April 20 (4/20) became the unofficial “high holiday” to celebrate cannabis culture and progress.
1973: Oregon became the first state to decriminalize cannabis based on amount of possession, spurring other states to liberalize cannabis laws.
1996: California passes Proposition 215, becoming the first state to legalize medical cannabis. Today, over 30 states have legalized use of medical marijuana.
2012: Colorado and Washington became the first two states to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. Now others are enacting similar laws.
As marijuana acceptance grew and new laws emerged, a plethora of new products hit the cannabis market. The inspiration behind GrowFloor and GrowWall greenhouse coverings is to support your business growing indoor cannabis for medical use and for growing recreational marijuana where legal.
